Title: Chance
Author's LJ/DWJ:  [livejournal.com profile] mitai
Categories: Sam, team, action/adventure, hurt/comfort, things that go *boom*, possibly super sam
Warnings: major whump, some violence
Author's Webpage/Fic list: N/A
Link to story: Chance
Why this should be read:
Chance is a very satisfying action fic, that picks up just as an off-world mission goes horribly wrong. SG-1 is separated and outnumbered, but it's up to them to stop a fanatic group from taking control of the planet. We get to see awesome Sam, snarky Daniel, and some black-ops Jack. Also, their prophecies say that Teal'c is an angel of God.

Why this should be read: A thoughtful, lyrical ensemble piece in which the could-have-beens ghost across the gaps between quantum realities, brush the characters like soft breaths, and die away.

Kaboom by kellifer (PG)

Title: Kaboom
Author's LJ/DWJ: [livejournal.com profile] kellifer_fic
Categories: Things that go *boom*, Action/Adventure, Daniel, Jack, Sam, Teal'c
Warnings: none
Author's Webpage/Fic list: SG-1 Master Fic List
Link to story: Kaboom
Why this should be read:
As with all of kellifer's fic, this is amazingly written. SG-1 is captured by the NID and separated, Jack with Sam and Daniel with Teal'c. We follow Jack's point of view as he and Sam do morse code with their boots, dig their way out of an explosion, and discover that Daniel and Teal'c have saved the day. The glimpse of Daniel and Teal'c friendship at the end is also very nice.

Calling all reccers: things that go *boom*

  • Jan. 11th, 2012 at 1:47 PM
Our new theme is one that is near and dear to SG-1's heart: blowing things up. :) Any gen story that focuses, or even features, the team making things go *boom* will fit this theme. So whether it's Sam blowing up a sun or the judicious use of C4 to break out of jail, we want to see those stories recced here!

Feel free to refresh your memory of the comm rules at the FAQ before posting. Official format is included in the FAQ entry and on the comm's profile page. If you choose to tag your own entry (you don't have to do so), please include the theme: things that go *boom* tag as well as any others that you find appropriate. And if you need a tag that isn't yet available, please comment and let me know.

List of female friendship recs; what next?

  • Jan. 8th, 2012 at 1:11 PM
The comm has been quiet for too long! I kept hoping for more female friendship recs, but here's the list:

Of Belonging to Another, by Isabelle (PG-13)

Scotoma, by Rydra Wong (PG-13)

C is for Child by izhilzha

Thanks to [personal profile] rbmifan for her contribution. :)

I'll be posting a new theme this week. I welcome any suggestions. Don't forget that anyone can post gen recs at any time, whether or not they fit the current theme.

Categories: female friendship, awesome women, Sam, Vala, Sarah Gardener, angst, character study
Warnings: none
Author's Webpage/Fic list: SG-1 fic tag
Link to story: Of Belonging to Another

Why this should be read: This is the kind of story we never get on the show: the aftermath of events, picking up the pieces of a shattered life. Here is Sam, Vala, and Sarah Gardener, in a meeting of the Ex-Hosts Club. Honest, painful, poignant, and well worth reading.

Scotoma, by Rydra Wong (PG-13)

Categories: female friendship, awesome women, Sha're, Sam, Janet, drama, angst, AU, character study
Warnings: none
Author's Webpage/Fic list:
Link to story: Scotoma

Why this should be read: This stunning AU has Sha're rescued in S6, while Daniel is Ascended. Not only is Sha're powerfully and amazingly herself -- determined, intelligent, with her own cultural perspective -- but the friendship that springs up between her and Sam is wonderful, honest, and real. This is one of my favorite stories, and a real keeper.

C is for Child by izhilzha

Title: C is for Child
Author's LJ/DWJ:  [livejournal.com profile] izhilzha
Categories: Janet Fraiser, Samantha Carter, Female friendship, Janet friendship
Warnings: None
Author's Webpage/Fic list: Masterlist of Fanfiction
Link to story: C is for Child
Why this should be read:

C is for Child is a bittersweet ficlet that sets the stage for Cassie in Singularity. When Janet faces the possibility of pregnancy, it's Sam she turns to for support and friendship. Both women are in character, and it's very easy to see them bonding like this over lunches. The ending is perfect.

We've been running an open comm for the last six weeks or so. Many thanks to those who recced while I've been mostly away! Here's the list:

recs from Paian and Hathor Girl )

Time for a new theme! This time, we're going with female friendship. This isn't quite the same as our awesome women theme, although I won't be surprised if they overlap a bit. :) We want recs of stories that feature the friendship between women, including original or SGA characters. Sam and Janet, Carolyn and Vala, Gairwyn and Thilana (if such a story exists, PLEASE rec it! or write it, even!) -- if it features two women sharing a friendship, we want to see it recced here!

Feel free to refresh your memory of the comm rules at the FAQ before posting. Official format is included in the FAQ entry and on thecomm's profile page. If you choose to tag your own entry (you don't have to do so), please include the theme: female friendship tag as well as any others that you find appropriate. And if you need a tag that isn't yet available, please comment and let me know.

She Went On, by Nonisland (G)

Title: She Went On
Author's LJ/DWJ/AO3: [personal profile] nonisland / [archiveofourown.org profile] nonisland
Categories: Character study, character: Sara O'Neill, character: Jack O'Neill, character: Daniel Jackson, theme: awesome women
Warnings: Canonical pre-series character death
Author's Webpage/Fic list: Fic Masterlist
Link to story: She Went On
Why this should be read: Sara fic is a rare find. Even rarer is good Sara fic that really is Sara fic, not Jack fic in disguise. This is a spare and unsentimental 500-word portrait of Sara becoming about herself.

Title: The Saga of Anubis (Or, How Daniel Jackson is Followed By a Kitten)
Author's LJ/DWJ/AO3: [livejournal.com profile] ladylade
Categories: Character: Daniel, character: Jack, character: Sam, character: Teal'c, character: Hammond, character: Fraiser, character: Siler, crackfic, humor, team, theme: crackfic
Warnings: Strong language, sexual references
Author's Webpage/Fic list: Unknown
Link to story: The Saga of Anubis (Or, How Daniel Jackson is Followed By a Kitten)
Why this should be read: It's not just a kitten that follows Daniel into his bathroom. It's not even just a Goa'uld kitten that follows Daniel into his bathroom. It's a macro-spouting baby Goa'uld LOLcat that follows Daniel into his bathroom, and about 2100 very funny words follow that.

Title: My Heart Shall Pass Unto Yours
Author's LJ/DWJ: [personal profile] pagan_twylight

Warnings: Discussion of violence and allusions to sexual slavery
Author's Webpage/Fic list: http://www.fanfiction.net/u/683376/Pagan_Twylight

Why this should be read: Background for Malek and his host. A quote angsty, but also beautiful story of how Malek got his current host.

Rascals by Roeskva (PG-13)

Title: Rascals

Categories: kidfic, humour
Warnings: none
Author's Webpage/Fic list: www.fanfiction.net/u/1406535/Roeskva
Link to story: Rascals
Why this should be read: Normally I don't read kidfic, but while this does follow the usual trope of  'alien device turns person into kid', the story is not quite like the others. This is the first one I have read that turns Tok'ra into kids - and not just the hosts. It's hilarious to see them not only behave as children, but also children who knows very little about Earth and its customs. I really enjoyed poor Jack O'Neill and Teal'c as they try to carry out the mission Hammond gives them - babysit their two team mates along with the three Tok'ra who are all now 6 years old!

Zephyr, by Gabolange (G)

  • Oct. 2nd, 2011 at 4:04 PM
Title: Zephyr
Author's LJ/DWJ/AO3: [personal profile] gabolange / [livejournal.com profile] gabolange / [archiveofourown.org profile] gabolange
Categories: character study, character: cam, character: daniel, character: jack, character: sam, character: teal'c, character: vala, era: futurefic, team, theme: super sam
Warnings: Secondary-character death
Author's Webpage/Fic list: [livejournal.com profile] nextnonsequitur
Link to story: Zephyr
Why this should be read: Set about ten years in the future, when Sam is the general in command of the SGC and the Stargate Program has just gone public, this lovely, pensive fic is a combination of turning-outward (Sam wrestling with the demands of presenting the Program to the world accurately and sympathetically via the unruly media) and turning-inward (the team, coming back together to mourn the passing of a longtime comrade, closing in tight on itself). Outstanding Sam characterization, plausible and poignant extrapolation, 2431 words.

Balancing the Books by Ololon (PG)

  • Sep. 30th, 2011 at 3:44 PM
Title: Balancing the Books
Author's LJ/DWJ: ololon (on LJ)
Categories: Adventure/Friendship
Warnings: none
Author's Webpage/Fic list: www.fanfiction.net/u/1447234/Ololon and rushingwind.livejournal.com/
Link to story: Balancing the Books
Why this should be read: Lovely look at Malek and his host, with an emphasis on his host, who we otherwise never hear. In this story the host (called Darin here) has to rescue himself, his unconscious symbiote, and Bra'tac who is a prisoner of the Goa'uld they were undercover at. There are several funny passages, and Bra'tac and Malek/Darin starts to become friends, and the latter gets their chance of repaying the debt they talk about in the episode "Allegiance".
