Title: Please Hang Up And Try Again (five phone calls Daniel Jackson never got)

Why this should be read: This wonderful fic is a collection of brilliant and heart breaking au snippets, interspersed with voice mails left for Daniel while he was ascended. I'm not usually a fan of angst - no matter how brilliant it is, I usually can't bear to reread. (Because I'm a wimp.) Maybe it's the au elements that make this one different, but I have had no problem reading it many times.

Daniel got a lot of phone calls over the years. Here's five he didn't.

A Heavenward Striving, By Katie (PG)

Why this should be read: This has so much of what I like in a fic, great world building, Sam and Daniel pursuing scientific and cultural mysteries, off-world political intrigue, and interesting OCs, in a suspenseful team story. I loved that it follows Sam's point of view throughout. The dialog is terrific and SG-1 are all in great form.

People seek knowledge for all sorts of reasons.

Damage Control, By Redbyrd (PG-13)

Title: Damage Control

Warnings: some bad language
Author's Webpage/Fic list: Redbyrd's Stargate Fanfiction

Why this should be read: One of my favorites, I have reread this story so many times that it's characterization of Steven Raynor has become cannon for me. Part of the fun of this fic is the view of Daniel through Steven's eyes and his comparison of pre-Stargate Daniel to the changed person he meets during "The Curse". But I also became very fond of Steven and really felt for him by the end.

Redbyrd brings some sanity to the Stargate world and the stakes in war against the goa'uld, the loss of Sarah and Dr. Jordan feel more real because of it. She writes "I wanted to tie up some of the loose ends in this episode and to try developing Steven's character into something a bit more complex than the very limited view we got from the show. I felt he couldn't be all bad if his first thought when they find him injured at the end of the episode was to apologize to Daniel."

Why this should be read: This fic is like a regular team episode, only with more details and character development than there is ever time for on the show. The point of view shifts from Jack, who is a prisoner separated from the rest of the team, to Sam, Daniel and Teal'c and back to Jack, allowing all of the original team to shine. Because sometimes you just want more SG-1.

Why this should be read: This may be my favorite Teal'c fic. It is beautifully written, funny and moving. I actually choked up at the ending the first time I read it. Starting with "Checkers" and ending with "Chutes and Ladders" each game gets longer, more involved and more interesting.

Plus it has wonderful illustrations! And links to some of the games mentioned! (I'm a geek about background stuff.) Really an amazing fic in only 2800 words.

Calling Sam Gardener!

  • Jul. 4th, 2010 at 10:22 AM
So our time travel theme inspired three recs:

The Other Side of the Time Loop, by Yvi (PG-13)

1969 Prime and Prime-Minus-One, by Redbyrd (PG-13)

Time Was, by Fabrisse (PG-13)

We are now starting Reccer's Weeks, in which a specific person volunteers to rec a mimimum of two fics during the course of a chosen week. First up is [personal profile] sam_gardener, who has often recced here in the past. These recs can be any genre (as long as it's gen, heh) so it'll be fun to see what we get!

[personal profile] sam_gardener will be tagging all recs with the reccer: sam gardener. Sam (may I call you Sam? ::grins::) can continue to use this tag even after the week has ended, and is welcome to retroactively tag any previous recs as well.

If you are interested in doing a reccer's week for the comm, the last two weeks of July are still available. You can comment at this entry to claim a week of your own.
