I'll be offline for the next two weeks, but I wanted to remind you all that we're still running the other media theme. If you've got a favorite vid, podfic, meta essay, comic, or picspam that you'd like to share, we'd love to see it recced here!

Why this should be read watched: Brihana makes so many wonderful vids that it's hard to choose just one! From the hilarious Stargate Cantina to the angsty Say the Words, she covers ship, gen, humor, drama, team... If you enjoy SG-1 vids at all, take the time to browse through her work. You're bound to find something you'll love.

The vid I'm reccing here is a fantastic retelling of the end of S1/beginning of S2 arc, starting from TBFTGOG and ending in Serpent's Lair. Great music, great scene choices, and I love the way the lyrics fit the story line impossibly well. A real treat that I always enjoy rewatching!

Why this should be read heard: Abyssis lovingly, eloquently traces the history of space travel on Earth, and how it has intertwined with Sam and Jack's lives. She deftly weaves past events with show canon, showing us the unique bond that they share, with their love of flight and the stars that shine above them. And Grav_ity takes this gorgeous character piece and reads it with all the quiet and powerful intensity that it fully deserves.

One of my all-time favorite Stargate fics, podficced brilliantly. This is just under half an hour of SG-1 at its best.

Link to story: A Failure of Leadership

Why this should be read: This fascinating character study of Jack and how his leadership (or lack thereof) impacts his team was posted back when [livejournal.com profile] redial_the_gate did The Other Side, but it's stuck with me ever since. I really like how Trindajae gives us a different perspective on why everyone behaved as they did during this rather fraught episode. Don't forget to browse the comments, too, for further discussion!

Full disclaimer: Why, yes, I was a mod at Redial. :)

Author's Webpage/Fic list: Sqbr at AO3
Link to story: Mafdet, Slayer of Serpents

Why this should be read: This hilarious comic strip (complete with full transcription) had me crying with laughter as it tells the real story behind the rebellion against Ra!

Not to mention the deep dark sekret about why cats can have eerily reflective eyes...

My favorite panels are the first two of page 6, but this is all great fun. Go read, giggle, and enjoy!
Title: Podfic of In Dulci Jubilo; written by Salieri, read by Aces
Author's LJ/DWJ: [personal profile] troyswann / [personal profile] aces
Categories: Sam, other media, character study, original charactesr, team, Janet, friendship
Warnings: none
Author's Webpage/Fic list: Salieri's Outside The Box
Link to story: links to podfic and text

Why this should be heard: This long and lush character study is simply gorgeous: Sam and her perspectives on the world, affected by close contact with a fascinating alien race, and filtered through the comfort and unwavering support of her teammates and friends. It's adult in the best sense of the word: intelligent, thoughtful, challenging. Aces does a stunning job of turning it into podfic, and this is half an hour of quality SG-1 at its best.

Why this should be watched: Absolutely hilarious trailer of a non-existent SG-1 movie that you just wish was real! I was grinning in the first few seconds, and laughing out loud by the end. :)

Mod note: yes, it includes Sam kissing Jack in Broca Divide. No, it is not shippy.

A new theme, and a request for future ones

  • Jul. 21st, 2013 at 5:10 PM
...So, remember that time back in October when we had a new theme of on the edges of canon?

We had six recs on that theme (click on the link above to read them), through March of this year, and then -- silence. My fault, I know.

So in an effort to get this rec comm going again (because I still love SG-1, as most of you do as well, and I've seen more and more references to rewatches lately), I've chosen a new theme for us: other media.

This is your opportunity to rec any kind of fanwork that's gen and related to SG-1, whether it's vids, picspam, meta, fanart, or any other kind of media that isn't actually fic.

Use common sense regarding the gen rules for the comm. Picspam for Moebius that includes the Sam/Jack kiss or a vid for Unending that includes scenes of Daniel/Vala aren't a problem, as long as they're not the focus of the fanwork; a vid that highlights every Daniel/Sha're kiss throughout the show, even though it's the pairing that's dear to my heart, shouldn't be recced here. If you've got any questions, feel free to ask.

I would also like to invite suggestions for future themes. You can see the list of past themes over here. And, of course, don't forget that any gen rec is welcome at any time, even if it's not related to the current theme.

J is for Justified, by Ivorygates (PG)

Author's LJ/DWJ: [personal profile] ivorygates
Categories: drama, angst, character study, on the edges of canon

Author's Webpage/Fic list: Fic Journal Table Of Contents
Link to story: J is for Justified

Why this should be read: Shau'nac deserves so much more than just to be a convenient catalyst for the creation of Tanith as Teal'c's new personal villain. And in this character sketch, stretching literally over nearly a century, Ivorygates highlights the enormity of the tragedy of Tanith's betrayal and Shau'nac's murder.

Shau'nac of the Red Hills had seen ninety-nine years come and go.

She would not see a hundred.

N is for Nondisclosure, by Magistrate (PG)

Categories: on the edges of canon, character study, ep related, Jonas, Kianna Cyr, angst
Warnings: none
Author's Webpage/Fic list: Magistrate on AO3
Link to story: N is for Nondisclosure

Why this should be read: This is a fantastic followup to Fallout: what happened to Kianna Cyr after the Goa'uld was removed, and how she deals with both Jonas, the Kelownans, and the ethical questions in the aftermath. With all the nuance and stellar characterization you expect from Magistrate, this one is a real keeper.

Environmental Factors by Staranise (teen)

Title: Environmental Factors
Author's LJ/DWJ:  [personal profile] staranise
Categories: edges of canon
Warnings: none
Link to story: Environmental Factors
Why this should be read: When the SGC rescues a goa'uld host, people like Helen Meyer oversee their recovery. Helen's one of the psychologists dedicated to studying goa'uld symbiosis and treating PTSD. After years of research, she finally gets to ask: what happens to the rescued hosts from other planets? She's not going to like the answer.

Very interesting and thoughtful look at both what the life of an SGC psychologist is like, and what the general fate of former hosts is.

Author's LJ/DWJ:
Categories: edges of canon
Warnings: none
Author's Webpage/Fic list:
Link to story: Five People (or Beings) Who Inhabit the SGC
Why this should be read: Some of these people we know from the show, and others we don't see, but all of these are interesting pictures of what might be happening just around the corner from the cameras. It's one of my favorite five things fics.

Time Heals All, by SG Betty (PG)

Categories: Moebius, Sam and Daniel friendship, angst, on the edges of canon

Author's Webpage/Fic list: Fic Index
Link to story: Time Heals All

Why this should be read: Here are Moebius!Daniel and AU!Samantha, sitting on the sands of Ancient Egypt. This fic is a rarity: a Moebius!Daniel at peace with the choices he's made, and optimistic about a future that he himself will never get to see... and an AU!Samantha who is ready to hear about the woman she once was, even if it's never going to fit what she is right now.

Why this should be read: So how does Doctor Carter choose to start picking up the pieces at the end of Point of View, after the quantum mirror shuts down? One good possibility is tracking down her reality's Daniel Jackson...

Here is a glimpse of a world shattered by Goa'uld invasion, a Daniel with a different background and history but still very much himself (brilliance, sharpness, and all), and the start of a new beginning of friendship and exploration through the Stargate.

I have been a horrible mod of late. My apologies to all of you.

Three (!) months ago, we had a new theme: season six. We had two recs with that theme posted.

Field Trip, by Eponymous Rose (G)

Naturally Selective by Elizabeth (PG)

There was one other non-themed rec posted since then:

SG-1's Siren Song by thothmes (PG)

Thanks to Seaboe and Campy for their contributions!

Our new theme is the edges of canon. What happened pre-series? Post-series? In one of the canonical alt-universes/timelines? How about characters we meet and never see again, like Nyan or Harlan or Merrin -- what happened to them? If you know of a gen fic that touches on these questions, we want to see it recced here!

Feel free to refresh your memory of the comm rules at the FAQ before posting. Official format is included in the FAQ entry and on the comm's profile page. If you choose to tag your own entry (you don't have to do so), please include the the edges of canon tag as well as any others that you find appropriate. And if you need a tag that isn't yet available, please comment and let me know.
