Why this should be heard: This long and lush character study is simply gorgeous: Sam and her perspectives on the world, affected by close contact with a fascinating alien race, and filtered through the comfort and unwavering support of her teammates and friends. Why this should be read: This wonderful teamy fic is set shortly after Daniel's return at the beginning of S7. SEF deftly weaves canon together, creating an excellent backstory for an intriguing alien race that we only glimpsed on the show. The story challenges our characters with thorny moral dilemmas, a staple of the show at its best; it offers the hint of skeletons in the Asgard closet, which is one of my favorite fic twists for some odd reason; and it's got solid gold teamy goodness, with all four characters working together and displaying true friendship and support under the most trying circumstances.

Off-world exploration, the possibility of major cultural impact on Earth, breathtaking firefights, dramatic and emotional affirmation of SG-1's close bond, fantastic Sam voice – what more could you ask for?

Why this should be read:pipisafoat has turned hir writing skills to the Gateverse, and among a flurry of delightful commentfics at the fic_promptly community posted this heart-wrenchingly sad and beautiful fic set in an AU of the episode '1969.' In this version of events, the team doesn't get to go back to the future within a few days; they continue living in the past for at least a year, which opens them to threats they didn't face in the episode. The stranded-in-time story has a deliciously apocaficcy flavor, and pings interestingly off Continuum (and also C. S. Lewis! but that might just be me), and the portrayal of Sam and Daniel's friendship is strong and lovely, but what blew me away was the powerful reveal and the cri de coeur of the ending.

Why this should be read: One of my absolute favorite AUs, and definitely my favorite kidfic!

My personal problem with downsizing characters is that they are almost inevitably infantilized. Nightspear deftly avoids this problem because her Daniel is starting out younger in the first place -- it was Melbourne and Claire who deciphered the Gate back in '82, and Daniel was actually born on Abydos. Yet despite his youth and his alienness (he's just as unfamiliar with Earth as Teal'c!), he is unquestionably the Daniel we know and love.

This long, intricate series covers seven seasons of fabulous twists and turns through canon. Some people die who survived in canon; others survive who died. Gaping plot holes are closed, repercussions are realistically faced, and the friendships (Daniel and Teal'c! Daniel and Jack! Daniel and Sam!) will absolutely blow you away.

I adore this series beyond reason. So give yourself several hours of reading time, kick back, and enjoy!
