Why this should be read: One of my absolute favorite AUs, and definitely my favorite kidfic!
My personal problem with downsizing characters is that they are almost inevitably infantilized. Nightspear deftly avoids this problem because her Daniel is starting out younger in the first place -- it was Melbourne and Claire who deciphered the Gate back in '82, and Daniel was actually born on Abydos. Yet despite his youth and his alienness (he's just as unfamiliar with Earth as Teal'c!), he is unquestionably the Daniel we know and love.
This long, intricate series covers seven seasons of fabulous twists and turns through canon. Some people die who survived in canon; others survive who died. Gaping plot holes are closed, repercussions are realistically faced, and the friendships (Daniel and Teal'c! Daniel and Jack! Daniel and Sam!) will absolutely blow you away.
I adore this series beyond reason. So give yourself several hours of reading time, kick back, and enjoy!
( excerpting seven seasons' worth of fic with a few paragraphs? can't be done, but here's a fun snippet anyway )

What would very-early-seasons Teal'c make of a North American convenience store? Daniel takes Teal'c with him on a coffee run topside, and finds out.
This was the author's first Stargate fic, and it's a cute and pointed one, and I wish she'd written more in the fandom.
About 577 words.

Why this should be read: I rarely enjoy apocafic, but this one grabbed me and didn't let go!
The Earth abruptly dies, taking half of SG-1 with it. Daniel and Teal'c, the shattered survivors, have to try and pick up the pieces. Teal'c wants revenge; Daniel wants survival, for himself, for Sha're, and for his adopted people on Abydos. But with no resources, no supplies, and no leads except a handful of addresses that Daniel remembers from debriefings about future missions, what chance do they have?
Disaster on Chulak makes things worse. Daniel is at the end of his rope when he gates to the last address he remembers from the debriefings: P3R-233. And suddenly, Daniel is facing the apocalypse. Again...
Here is Daniel and Teal'c friendship, AU upon AU, and the determination to never, ever give up.

Why this should be read: I have a special fondness for Moebius fic that highlights the closeness between our Daniel and AU!Teal'c. One of these, Singing Down the Moon, has already been recced here. But With the Dying is the first - and the best - that I ever read.
Here is a Daniel who has lost his team, and is faced with three people who wear their faces but do not share their life experiences. And now he has to stand sentinel over another Teal'c, who has a symbiote that will soon mature, and no access to tretonin, and who makes an inevitable decision...
And the last paragraph will break your heart.
An empty, echoing future for the sake of freedom for others. Lonely. Powerful. Good.

Why this should be read:
This is a painful but wonderfully gratifying missing scene for 'Secrets.' It explains quite a bit and expands on even more in the space of its 1500 words -- a great example of fic filling in the gaps left onscreen, both logistical and emotional.
Aurora's portrayal of the characters is always spot-on. Reading this is like watching a scene that was shot for the episode but cut for time, with the entree into Teal'c's mind and heart that prose permits, and with Aurora's eye for continuity and plot.

Why This Must Be Read: Debby offers a fantastic retelling of Solitudes from Daniel's POV, weighed by his desperate determination to find Jack and Sam and his promise to Teal'c that they will somehow get their friends back. Teal'c and Daniel's friendship is steadfast and solid in the course of their support for one another during their search.
Great scenes with Hammond, superb Teal'c, and excellent Daniel perspective. Separation Anxiety is definitely a keeper.

Why This Must Be Read:Teal'c spent eight years trying to free his people, only to see the Jaffa Council descend into petty squabbling and self-interest in the wake of all his sacrifice. If (like me) you were frustrated by the Jaffa storyline in S9-10, then this ficlet is definitely for you!
When a frustrated Teal'c returns to the SGC after a trying visit to Dakara, Daniel shows up at his door to offer words of empathy and encouragment. The short conversation that follows bespeaks years of friendship and philosophical discussion, as Teal'c and Daniel consider the difficulty of reshaping thought and habit and the challenge of beginnings. With a wry tagline and a light touch, Politics is a lovely look at a friendship that defies expectations and continues to thrive.

Why This Must Be Read: Is there anything more heartbreaking than Moebius? Daniel is trapped in Ancient Egypt with a Sam and Jack and Teal'c that are not the people he knew, and AU Teal'c fights for a future which he has never known, and will never get the chance to see. And in Singing Down the Moon, Butterfly lovingly paints a vivid scene from Teal'c's POV, as he asks Daniel, in the aftermath of their victory over Ra, to help him die.
Elegant and elegiac, Teal'c watches Daniel, comparing him with the Daniel he himself killed. He listens to the velvet voice that bespeaks the bright and shining future that neither one will get to enjoy. And he takes comfort in a strength that they both share, in their unwavering convictions.
Beautifullly wrenching. You will remember this one for a long time to come.

Why This Must Be Read: JD treats us to a glimpse of teamy goodness and solid Teal'c and Daniel friendship, as SG-1 sits down to Chinese takeout and the conversation turns to the origins of General Tso's chicken. There is deft characterization and wry observations, and a final exchange between Teal'c and Daniel that puts their hopes for the future into truly unique perspective.
Jaffa spicing habits, fortune cookies, teamy goodness, Teal'c and Daniel friendship: a delightful recipe under any circumstances!
