Why this should be read: Teal'c launches a not-so-solo rescue mission and ends up changing his entire life because of the dual influence of Bra'tac and a young Jaffa girl. I just, I can't even articulate what it is I like about this story, because I like the whole thing too much. The fic totally embodies Teal'c, speaking quietly but saying volumes with its actions.

Why this should be read: Two compact and sparkling gems of characterization through reading material. Teal'c's choices (official and unofficial) are full of snark and satire and social commentary, conveyed in a style that perfectly emulates Teal'c's brand of deadpan humor. Daniel's choice is vividly evocative of his family history as he conceives it; his section is beautifully written, insightful and moving and uplifting. And both pieces have killer last lines.

Why this should be read:
A wonderful response to the prompt 'Teal'c, the transition from Cronus' world to Chulak' at the Awesome People of Color Comment-a-thon, 'Extolled' dramatizes a pivotal time in Teal'c's youth and and paints a compelling portrait of his mother in the aftermath of his father's murder. It's also a meditation on how much is withheld from us as children, and how much we don't know -- but, as experienced adults, can guess -- about the people our parents were. About 800 words.

What would very-early-seasons Teal'c make of a North American convenience store? Daniel takes Teal'c with him on a coffee run topside, and finds out.
This was the author's first Stargate fic, and it's a cute and pointed one, and I wish she'd written more in the fandom.
About 577 words.

Why this should be read: I would rec this fic for the perfect character voices alone, but it is also fabulous as an "outsider" perspective, with an open minded and perceptive Teal'c considering the strange new world where he has exiled himself. Basically Teal'c interacts with the other members of Sg-l, explores the SGC, prepares for an off world mission, and it's all just perfect.
The Tau'ri seem not to mind having more questions than answers.

Why this should be read:
This is a painful but wonderfully gratifying missing scene for 'Secrets.' It explains quite a bit and expands on even more in the space of its 1500 words -- a great example of fic filling in the gaps left onscreen, both logistical and emotional.
Aurora's portrayal of the characters is always spot-on. Reading this is like watching a scene that was shot for the episode but cut for time, with the entree into Teal'c's mind and heart that prose permits, and with Aurora's eye for continuity and plot.

Why this should be read: I recced this one back in early 2007, and it's even better than I remembered!
This intriguing fic, written before Tangent aired, gives us a fascinating original character: a pilot flying the converted death glider from The Serpent's Lair, and his observations of the civilian that the Air Force insists he take along on a test flight – a mysterious, enigmatic, silent man who seems to be codenamed "Teal'c." And when the routine flight takes a sudden serious turn, the pilot finds himself awed not only by Teal'c's undeniable expertise, but also by his character, his courtesy, and his grace.
It's rare to find an author who can create an original character and invest him with personality and depth without allowing that creation to take over the story entirely. Elysium walks the perfect line here; Major Mike Gavilan treats us to his initial reluctance to deal with Teal'c, his growing admiration and awe for his skills, and his confused ignorance of everything that he shouldn't know, and doesn't get to find out.
Some of this is clearly AU for what we know of SG-1 today: Jack never did bother to learn to speak Go'auld, and of course this death glider doesn't have Apophis' recall device. But I enjoyed this story for its intelligence, its narrator, its interesting storyline, and Elysium's wonderful portrayal of Teal'c as seen by an outsider. And when we do get Teal'c's perspective on events, his POV is marvelous - his bemusement and amusement with the Tau'ri, their world, and their youth.
Despite the annoying white-text-on-black-screen setup - if you can, toggle off the page colors for an easier read - Gavilan is a story that any fan of Teal'c is sure to savor.

Why this should be read: Because there are way too many of us that wish that this wasn't in the AU category, and think that the Jaffa deserved a better storyline than the one they got slapped with in S9-10.
The story diverges from canon sometime towards the beginning of S7 - most specifically, Death Knell never happened, and the Jaffa remained at the Alpha Site. Written intelligently from the POV of Ry'ac, this is the story of "Teal'c of the Tau'ri" - with both the positive and negative connotations abscribed to that nomenclature. The fic draws us a picture equally based in hope and realism, as the Jaffa, new to this strange, wonderful thing called "freedom," stumble along the path towards a brighter future.
Teal'c, as perceived by his son, is simply awesome. The cameos from the rest of SG-1 are wonderfully in character, as are the minor canon characters, like Rak'nor and Ry'ac, and some excellently drawn original ones. This is what I imagined Teal'c would become, once the Jaffa won their freedom - and despite SG-1's temporary loss, I only wish the Jaffa would have had him as their gain.

Why this should be read: As paian is so brilliant at doing, in a short 580 words, she manages to capture Teal'c's sense of self, his feelings about being on Earth versus Chulak, his quiet nobility, and the millennia that encompass the history since humans were first taken from the first world, scattered amongst the stars, and changed. It's a quietly moving portrait of Teal'c as the self-aware embodiment of the reunion between Jaffa and Earth.
