Why this should be read: Set about ten years in the future, when Sam is the general in command of the SGC and the Stargate Program has just gone public, this lovely, pensive fic is a combination of turning-outward (Sam wrestling with the demands of presenting the Program to the world accurately and sympathetically via the unruly media) and turning-inward (the team, coming back together to mourn the passing of a longtime comrade, closing in tight on itself). Outstanding Sam characterization, plausible and poignant extrapolation, 2431 words.

Link to story: Strange Celebrations
Why this should be read: World building! Teamy goodness! Clever banter! Also great writing, action, plot, and SG-1 behaving like intelligent adults. This is one of my favorite stories, by one of my favorite authors. SG-1 as written by Cofax is in many ways the show I would have liked to see on my TV screen.
SG-1, some unpleasant weather, an alien city fifty-thousand lightyears from home, and a dozen or so uninvited Jaffa. Oh, and (maybe) an apocalypse.

Link to story: Half-life
Why this should be read: In this peaceful, gently bantery post-series piece from Jack's point of view, Jack and Daniel are hanging out after a barbecue, Daniel translating the insults hurled by the kids tearing around the yard, Jack translating Daniel. (We don't know whose kids they are, just that they're there, the next generation, still full of energy as evening comes on, literally and, maybe, metaphorically.) A smile-inducing 1320-word meditation, rich with keen observations and character insights in a beautifully portrayed Jack headspace.

Why this should be read: I love it when the guys are smart and competent, plus I have a soft spot for adventure stories and this fic satisfies on both counts. I was going to rec this for the Teal'c friendship theme but didn't get to it, and it works for the Daniel friendship theme just as well. :)
Teal'c and Daniel, on an adventure.

Why this should be read:
It's an interesting vignette about Vala, and how she's been changed by her time on SG-1, and what she would do if she found herself in another universe in the future and having to start from scratch (in this case, the Vorkosigan universe from Lois McMaster Bujold's excellent series of books, which I cannot recommend highly enough). Very short, this suggests more possibilities than it deals with, but I find it interesting to read and think about.

Why this should be read:
This is one of the most innovative crossover mechanisms I've seen in a long time. It makes perfect sense, though. (Hint: it's post-Moebius, for Stargate canon.) It was just posted today, and I love it already. Very well done, and definitely worth the time to read.

Author's Webpage/Fic list: Katie's Stargate SG-1 Fanfic
Link to story: Almost a Statesman
Why this should be read: Because there are way too many of us that wish that this wasn't in the AU category, and think that the Jaffa deserved a better storyline than the one they got slapped with in S9-10.
The story diverges from canon sometime towards the beginning of S7 - most specifically, Death Knell never happened, and the Jaffa remained at the Alpha Site. Written intelligently from the POV of Ry'ac, this is the story of "Teal'c of the Tau'ri" - with both the positive and negative connotations abscribed to that nomenclature. The fic draws us a picture equally based in hope and realism, as the Jaffa, new to this strange, wonderful thing called "freedom," stumble along the path towards a brighter future.
Teal'c, as perceived by his son, is simply awesome. The cameos from the rest of SG-1 are wonderfully in character, as are the minor canon characters, like Rak'nor and Ry'ac, and some excellently drawn original ones. This is what I imagined Teal'c would become, once the Jaffa won their freedom - and despite SG-1's temporary loss, I only wish the Jaffa would have had him as their gain.
