Why This Must Be Read: This is fabulously Jack, pared down to absolute essentials as he escapes Earth in the wake of Ori domination and Goa'uld occupation. Always moving, always searching, wary and skilled... and thinking that maybe, on the next planet, he can find a reason to hope.

Ingara follows PMW-957, and Walloon follows Ingara. It's like fishing, Jack decides as he hunches over a damp and fizzling fire a couple of klicks up the valley from the Stargate on Walloon. You can't really tell whether the fish is there, you can only cast the line out there and hope to get a strike. A good fisherman can tell where fish are likely to be, but you can't know for sure.

Triptych, By Mad Maudlin (PG-13)

Why this should be read: I recommend this fic to anyone who has seen Moebius, it is a really well executed story showing three of the possible alternate realities that might have been created by the events in that episode. The dialogue and character voices are all wonderful which makes the whole time travel/AU theme seem even creepier. About 4,770 words.

Matter can neither be created nor destroyed.

Categories: theme: apocafic, Teal'c and Sam friendship, angst, character study
Warnings: Earth goes *boom*
Author's Webpage/Fic list: Fanfiction Masterlist

Why this should be read: Bittersweet melancholy at the end of all things: Sam and Teal'c standing on a beach, waiting for the world to end. Gentle friendship layered with regret, and a short, worthy read.

Teal'c at her side, Sam closes her eyes, lets the last speck of chocolate dissolve, and takes a step forward so the water tugs at her ankles. They don't look back.

Why this should be read: After the Ori conquest the remaining members of sg-1 start a resistance movement. By the time of this story the rest of the team is not there (although their presence is still felt). Sam and Cam never give up - on either the future or their daily lives. Their stubborn insistence in continuing to try and put things right against absurd odds is perfectly in character, as is their mutual support and camaraderie.

It's a hopeful and beautifully written fic, with all the little details that make you believe that you are right there.

Written for the 2007 SG-1 Jubilee fic exchange: Thanksgiving with the Ori resistance.

The Wrong Button, by Knightshade (PG)

Categories: Daniel Jackson, Jack O’Neill, Samantha Carter, apocafic, humor, angst, Jack and Daniel friendship
Warnings: none

Link to story: The Wrong Button

Why This Must Be Read: “Jack always suspected that one day Daniel would push the wrong button and the world would end.”

Of course, it’s which world that makes this story so fascinating…

What begins as fun and fluffy, with entertaining Wonder Twins geekery and fantastic Jack-and-Daniel banter, suddenly takes a ninety degree turn into horror when the wrong button gets pushed and Sam, Jack, and Daniel get to literally watch as a world is completely destroyed. There’s great characterization and wonderful dialogue, as Jack helps Daniel come to some kind of acceptance -- by reminding him of their shared history, and the triumphs and tragedies that inevitably result just from living.

Call this a sort of light apocafic, perhaps. But read it, and enjoy!

Strange Celebrations, by Cofax (teen)

Why this should be read: World building! Teamy goodness! Clever banter! Also great writing, action, plot, and SG-1 behaving like intelligent adults. This is one of my favorite stories, by one of my favorite authors. SG-1 as written by Cofax is in many ways the show I would have liked to see on my TV screen.

SG-1, some unpleasant weather, an alien city fifty-thousand lightyears from home, and a dozen or so uninvited Jaffa. Oh, and (maybe) an apocalypse.

Warnings: Major character deaths, all offscreen, and zombie-ish violence.
Author's Webpage/Fic list: Surreallis Fic (My words, let me show you them.)

Why this should be read: To quote the summary for this thoughtful fic: angst, apocafic, hope, zombies, donuts.

Teal'c, lone survivor on Earth, slowly, contemplatively makes his way to Area 51 for what he prays will be his ticket off-planet. You will be moved by his thoughts on the Tau'ri, the little metal box of keepsakes he carries, and the final memento he takes from Earth, to serve as its legacy in the stars.

Despite being apocafic, this is almost gentle, and perfectly Teal'c... and you'll finish reading it with a smile.

Calling all reccers: apocafic recs!

  • Apr. 26th, 2010 at 4:54 PM
Time for a new theme! Apocafic was one of the most popular choices in our poll earlier this year, so it's time to rec all those stories where the Earth (or another planet) goes boom and life continues anyway (or doesn't). Disasters on-world or off-world, with or without death counts, AUs or alternate timelines, Goa'uld or Ori or even self-inflicted - if it's apocafic and gen, we want to see it recced here!

If you tag your own recs, please include theme: apocafic.. Don't forget that you may rec other fic that doesn't fit this specific theme, too. And now's a most auspicious time for reccing any gen fic, since [community profile] three_weeks_for_dw goes live today!

Feel free to refresh your memory of the comm rules at the FAQ before posting. Official format is included in the FAQ entry and on the comm's profile page. And, as always, I will happily answer any questions you might have, and welcome any suggestions for future themes.
