Why this should be read: So how does Doctor Carter choose to start picking up the pieces at the end of Point of View, after the quantum mirror shuts down? One good possibility is tracking down her reality's Daniel Jackson...

Here is a glimpse of a world shattered by Goa'uld invasion, a Daniel with a different background and history but still very much himself (brilliance, sharpness, and all), and the start of a new beginning of friendship and exploration through the Stargate.

Why this should be read: I love it when authors fill in the gaps between episodes. Here, we have a fantastic exploration of Charlie-the-Reetou's first weeks with the Tok'ra: his blending, his loneliness and uncertainty, some hard truths, and the beginnings of some real friendships. Just wonderful!

Why this should be read: What happened when Drey'auc and Ry'ac were abandoned by Teal'c in "Children of the Gods"? The character voices and atmosphere in this ficlet are perfect and heartbreaking. and it's a wonderful little view of the ordinary life that will continue on Chulak for most Jaffa. Penknife's Drey'auc is truly awesome and I would love to see more of her. (740 words)

The ones left behind.

Can I request a character tag for Drey'auc?

Why this should be read:

"Of all the amoral former hosts I've spent time with, I wanted to kill you the least."

Anise/Freya got a really bad rap in fandom; there was more than a little misogyny in the "Tok'ra Barbie" label.  And okay, she was annoying, but just because Our Heroes didn't like her doesn't make her Evil.  This is the fic that fleshed her out and made her real to me, with all her flaws and all her strengths.  And this fic is about Vala, too, another character who sometimes gets a bum rap in fandom.  This fic is about their friendship, two very different women who learn to value one another.  This fic is about Vala, recovering from her time as Qe'tesh's host and the immediate aftermath.  I would never have imagined these two together, but I am so glad [personal profile] sixbeforelunch did, because this is an awesome story, about awesome women.

Warnings: None
Author's Webpage/Fic list: AO3

Why this should be read:

In this fic, dsudis gives us a heartwarming, and slightly sad, account of the aftermath of Fire and Water. We follow Jack, Teal'c and Sam in turn as they deal with the lingering memory of Daniel's death, and then Daniel's POV as he wonders what's gotten into his team. Very well written overall, and excellent early teamfic.

Fostering Relations, By Aelfgyfu (Teen)

Why this should be read: Kidfic with a little twist. While I really enjoy many of the standard tropes, it's also fun to read a fic that deconstructs some of them. Plus, this is a satisfying off world story with an emphasis on character relationships, including Janet and Bill Lee. The fic is set in season 7, between "Death Knell" and "Heroes" and deals with some of the repercussions from "Evolution". About 52,000 words.

A desert planet, a Fountain of Youth device, and SG-1; what could possibly go wrong?

First Lessons, By Redbyrd (G)

Why this should be read: What happens after Ry'ac wakes up with his brand new primta after S1 Bloodlines? If you like fic about the consequences of events in episodes, this one is a beauty. The very young Ry'ac is believably childish and it was great to see him at that age when he wasn't unconscious or brainwashed. Also, Drey'auc and Bra'tac are awesome. About 2300 words.

Ry'ac learns some new things after receiving his primta--but is he taking them seriously enough?

Title: Daniel of Abydos series
Author's DWJ: [personal profile] nightspear
Categories: Daniel, team, friendship, drama, novel, AU, kidfic
Warnings: various minor character deaths (and survivals)
Author's Webpage/Fic list: List of Stories
Link to stories: begins with Translations, available as entries on LJ or as single page file; links to subsequent novels at link

Why this should be read: One of my absolute favorite AUs, and definitely my favorite kidfic!

My personal problem with downsizing characters is that they are almost inevitably infantilized. Nightspear deftly avoids this problem because her Daniel is starting out younger in the first place -- it was Melbourne and Claire who deciphered the Gate back in '82, and Daniel was actually born on Abydos. Yet despite his youth and his alienness (he's just as unfamiliar with Earth as Teal'c!), he is unquestionably the Daniel we know and love.

This long, intricate series covers seven seasons of fabulous twists and turns through canon. Some people die who survived in canon; others survive who died. Gaping plot holes are closed, repercussions are realistically faced, and the friendships (Daniel and Teal'c! Daniel and Jack! Daniel and Sam!) will absolutely blow you away.

I adore this series beyond reason. So give yourself several hours of reading time, kick back, and enjoy!

excerpting seven seasons' worth of fic with a few paragraphs? can't be done, but here's a fun snippet anyway )

Triptych, By Mad Maudlin (PG-13)

Why this should be read: I recommend this fic to anyone who has seen Moebius, it is a really well executed story showing three of the possible alternate realities that might have been created by the events in that episode. The dialogue and character voices are all wonderful which makes the whole time travel/AU theme seem even creepier. About 4,770 words.

Matter can neither be created nor destroyed.

Why this should be read: I guess the recent meta about Jack in [personal profile] princessofgeeks' journal and [livejournal.com profile] redbyrd_sgfic's fic put me in mind of cofax's wonderful take on Jack O'Neill. This very short story is just how I would imagine the original sg-1 stranded in the past, with Jack doing his best to take care of his team.

Post-ep for Moebius. Five thousand years of history, and they're running out of time.

Last call: repercussions recs

  • Sep. 11th, 2009 at 12:27 AM
The theme of repercussions will be ending this Sunday. Frankly, I expected to see lots of juicy recs for this one - some of the best episode-related fanfics are all about dealing with the aftermath of events in canon! So let's see those recs, folks, before the repercussions theme ends!

Posting format is available on the comm's profile and in the FAQ. And if you've got any questions, don't hesitate to ask.

And You Peacemakers Go..., by Julie

Title: And You Peacemakers Go to the Same Place as Soldiers
Author's DW: [personal profile] splash_the_cat
Categories: episode related, Samantha Carter, character study, angst
Warnings: none
Author's Webpage: Moments of Adoration
Link: And You Peacemakers Go to the Same Place as Soldiers

Why This Must Be Read: It was one thing for Sam to discover that Jolinar's temporary possession of her body left her capable of using the healing device; in Seth, we see her badly shaken by her newly-found ability to use the ribbon device to kill. Julie gives us Sam in those days right afterwards, recovering from a disastrous mission in which she'd been forced to use the ribbon device again... and this time, with deadly consequences.

What follows, among the angst and anguish and struggle, is a fascinating character study into what makes Sam so wonderfully herself. There's her bitterness over Jolinar, and how the memories and emotions that the symbiote left behind are twisting her own feelings. There's her uncertainty of what she's become, and the knowledge of how she might have to use those abilities again. And there's the bulwark of her teammates' support, in every circumstance, ready to stand at her side when she needs them.

The Parting Glass, by Redbyrd (PG)

  • Sep. 1st, 2009 at 6:58 PM
Title The Parting Glass
Author's DWJ: [personal profile] redbyrd
Categories: Daniel Jackson, Robert Rothman, team, episode related, angst, drama, theme: repercussions
Warnings: references to canon character deaths
Author's Webpage: Redbyrd's Stargate Fanfiction
Link: The Parting Glass

Why This Must Be Read: Redbyrd offers us a poignant, painful glimpse into one of the realities of the SGC: the many, many people who never make it back. The story is set against the backdrop of The First Ones, with Daniel's slow and horrified realization of just how many people died. There are memories of Robert Rothman, and the family and friends they've loved and lost, and the soldiers that should never remain nameless.

Everyone gets a little drunk, in the end, as Daniel recites the names of all those who were lost ever since the Tau'ri first ventured into the greater universe. And if you're a little teary-eyed by the end, too... well, I assure you you'll be in good company.

"Let's drink to SG-11," suggested Coburn.

"To all the dead," Pierce added.

"To all the dead." Daniel repeated softly. "Yes."

Calling all reccers: repercussions!

  • Aug. 27th, 2009 at 4:32 PM
Our newest theme is repercussions. SG-1 is spectacularly bad at letting us see the fallout of disastrous situations, whether it's mistakes, crises, injuries, deaths, or just a "very bad day." Luckily, there are lots of fanfic writers out there to pick up the slack!

Feel free to read the FAQ before posting. Official format is included in the FAQ entry and on the comm's profile page. If you choose to tag your own rec, please add the tag "theme: repercussions." And, as always, I will happily answer any questions you might have, and welcome any suggestions for future themes.
