Why this should be read: Normally I don't read kidfic, but while this does follow the usual trope of 'alien device turns person into kid', the story is not quite like the others. This is the first one I have read that turns Tok'ra into kids - and not just the hosts. It's hilarious to see them not only behave as children, but also children who knows very little about Earth and its customs. I really enjoyed poor Jack O'Neill and Teal'c as they try to carry out the mission Hammond gives them - babysit their two team mates along with the three Tok'ra who are all now 6 years old!

Why this should be read: An old school - fun with all the tropes - kind of fic. It starts when John Sheppard from an alternate universe shows up at area 51 seeking refuge for a Daniel Jackson who was kidnapped from his reality's past. This fic has quantum mirrors, time travel, the Fates from Greek mythology, Lya of the Nox, life sucking monsters - and they never even leave the SGC. About 17,520 words.
You can't outrun fate, but sometimes you can outwit it.

Why this should be read: Kidfic with a little twist. While I really enjoy many of the standard tropes, it's also fun to read a fic that deconstructs some of them. Plus, this is a satisfying off world story with an emphasis on character relationships, including Janet and Bill Lee. The fic is set in season 7, between "Death Knell" and "Heroes" and deals with some of the repercussions from "Evolution". About 52,000 words.
A desert planet, a Fountain of Youth device, and SG-1; what could possibly go wrong?

Why this should be read: When I was looking at Pepper's fics I saw another fun kidfic with Cassie and Teal'c, how could I resist? In this sweet little fic, Teal'c goes to fellow alien Cassandra Fraiser after the rest of SG-1 compeletly fail to understand Jaffa humor in the third season episode "Seth".

Why this should be read: Really, truly, funny. Pepper labels it "highly indulgent" and normally I don't care for babyfic but if you enjoy OT4, (gen!OT4 of course), and kidfic tropes at all, this is a great indulgence. There's lots of funny dialog and somehow everyone remains in character, with just the perfect amount of crackiness. About 8910 words.

Why this should be read: What happens after Ry'ac wakes up with his brand new primta after S1 Bloodlines? If you like fic about the consequences of events in episodes, this one is a beauty. The very young Ry'ac is believably childish and it was great to see him at that age when he wasn't unconscious or brainwashed. Also, Drey'auc and Bra'tac are awesome. About 2300 words.
Ry'ac learns some new things after receiving his primta--but is he taking them seriously enough?

Why this should be read: So many good Cassie fics—how to choose? I'm going with totally adorable as my criteria.
Uncle Jack and Uncle Daniel take a very young Cassie on a trip to the zoo. Where, you know, all the animals are confined. Then ensues much catering to child logic. I'm utterly charmed that the girl who was rescued from a devastated planet indulges in some rescue fantasies of her own.

Why this should be read: What would a theme be without a Penknife fic? Her usual mature writing, realism, and incisive characterization are in full force throughout this look at Daniel's childhood.
We see little Daniel's independence, stubbornness, and ultimate practicality. He's a precocious child, but still a child. The foster system and families aren't monsters, just overworked people with circumstances of their own, ill-suited to understanding this intellectual, non-Americanized kid.
It reads like canon, a beautifully written portrait of young Daniel, with hints of adult Daniel's self-awareness as he looks back.

Why this should be read:
And here's the other fic that stuck with me after my kidfic-spree a few months ago. This is an alternate take on the episode Fallen: about a year after Dr. Daniel Jackson takes his leave of Earth, the NCIS crew come across a young boy lying naked in the middle of a crime scene. Unsure of his identity and connection to the murder, they take him into custody. But how can a little boy have the exact same fingerprints as an MIA civilian consultant to the Air Force?
I love Wonderland's portrayal of downsized!Daniel here. He's obviously affected by the whole amnesia and waking up next to a dead body thing, but he's not overly emotional and in general he acts a lot like how I imagine Daniel as a kid would act. Great reactions by the NCIS crew, too (most of the fic is from their POV), though I confess I'm not terribly familiar with the series.

Why this should be read:
Here's a kid!Jack fic with an Ancient twist. SG-1 is on a mission off-world when Jack gets on the wrong side of some Ancient technology and ends up about 6 years old, missing a lot of memories, and unable to speak anything but Ancient. We follow our heroes as they try to adjust to this changed Jack and deal with interest from both their own government and less corporeal people.
It's fluffy and angsty by turns. There's a strong focus on Jack and Daniel throughout the fic, with a definite father/son dynamic that evolves throughout. The thing that kept me reading, though, was the slow reveal of exactly what Jack knows and can do now that his head's been messed with (again) by the Ancients. All this adds up to a kidfic that should keep you interested until the very end.

Why this should be read: Remember how awful it was when the Gamekeeper made Daniel rewatch his parents getting squished? You know how Daniel impulsively acts to save people? Yeah, well ... when SG-1 goes on a mission into a parallel universe, thirty years in the past, Daniel sees little Daniel still in shock from his parents' death, and snatches him away from the indifference he knows the boy is going to experience.
SG-1 has to help big Daniel through the emotional issues from his childhood he never really got over, find a real home for little Daniel, deal with the physical symptoms of two of the same person in the same universe, and figure out how not to screw up the reality's future. Along the way Jack enacts another fix, played out beautifully in an epilogue by Darcy. It's everything you could have wished for our angsty heroes, even if only in the parallel reality.

Why this should be read: So the members of the team are suddenly downsized. What makes this so much fun, though, is the secondary cast of characters – Hammond, Janet, Jacob, and even Robert Rothman and Nyan (two of my favorites, to be honest!).
While the antics of the children are enjoyable – Jack’s Froot Loops, Daniel’s passive resistance against speaking (or wearing shoes), Sam’s flat refusal to wear anything pink and frilly – it’s really the reactions of the adults around them that make the reader smile. There’s Rothman’s frustration that his boss has turned into what he considers to be a horrible child; there’s Jacob’s secret delight at having some time back with his little girl again. And there’s Teal’c’s bemusement at the personalities of his younger teammates, and Nyan’s drive to help, and Janet’s struggle to communicate with Daniel...
This one is fluffy and fun, with a little character study sneaking around the edges. And it’s definitely a fic that you’re sure to enjoy.

Why this should be read: One of my absolute favorite AUs, and definitely my favorite kidfic!
My personal problem with downsizing characters is that they are almost inevitably infantilized. Nightspear deftly avoids this problem because her Daniel is starting out younger in the first place -- it was Melbourne and Claire who deciphered the Gate back in '82, and Daniel was actually born on Abydos. Yet despite his youth and his alienness (he's just as unfamiliar with Earth as Teal'c!), he is unquestionably the Daniel we know and love.
This long, intricate series covers seven seasons of fabulous twists and turns through canon. Some people die who survived in canon; others survive who died. Gaping plot holes are closed, repercussions are realistically faced, and the friendships (Daniel and Teal'c! Daniel and Jack! Daniel and Sam!) will absolutely blow you away.
I adore this series beyond reason. So give yourself several hours of reading time, kick back, and enjoy!
( excerpting seven seasons' worth of fic with a few paragraphs? can't be done, but here's a fun snippet anyway )
(Mind you, I've read some excellent ones that I've enjoyed tremendously. So you'll all just have to rec your favorites to encourage me to read some more, right?)
For the purpose of our theme, kidfic is identified as any of the following: stories set pre-series, about any member of the team (or someone else from the show) as children; fic about canon children on the show (Reetou!Charlie, Merrim, Cassie, Shifu, etc.); fic in which someone's interaction with children plays a major role; and stories in which someone is turned into a child (or is an AU in which the character is a child to begin with). If there's another kidfic definition that I'm missing, please comment and let me know!
Remember that this is a GEN rec community, so stories about the team's biological children (excluding Ry'ac, of course) invariably would include ship and would not be permitted. If you're not sure if a story qualifies, don't hesitate to ask for clarification.
Feel free to refresh your memory of the comm rules at the FAQ before posting. Official format is included in the FAQ entry and on the comm's profile page. If you choose to tag your own entry (you don't have to do so), please include the theme: kidfic tag as well as any others that you find appropriate.
