Why this should be read: This stunning AU has Sha're rescued in S6, while Daniel is Ascended. Not only is Sha're powerfully and amazingly herself -- determined, intelligent, with her own cultural perspective -- but the friendship that springs up between her and Sam is wonderful, honest, and real. This is one of my favorite stories, and a real keeper.

Why this should be read:

C is for Child is a bittersweet ficlet that sets the stage for Cassie in Singularity. When Janet faces the possibility of pregnancy, it's Sam she turns to for support and friendship. Both women are in character, and it's very easy to see them bonding like this over lunches. The ending is perfect.

Why this should be read: It's not just a kitten that follows Daniel into his bathroom. It's not even just a Goa'uld kitten that follows Daniel into his bathroom. It's a macro-spouting baby Goa'uld LOLcat that follows Daniel into his bathroom, and about 2100 very funny words follow that.

Author's LJ/DWJ: [livejournal.com profile] thestylus
Categories: Janet, Drama, Angst, Pre-Series
Warnings: Violence, medical gore, language
Author's Webpage/Fic list: NA
Link to story: Every Art and Artifice

Why this should be read: This is an amazingly good pre-series fic about Dr. Fraiser during the first Gulf War. Although Janet is perfectly in character, it would stand up on it's own as a story about military medical personnel working near (or in) combat situations.

While not a comfortable narrative, very intense and heartbreaking, it's a beautiful backstory for the Janet Fraiser we meet at the SGC.

I will strive always, to excel in every art and artifice of war. I know that I will be called upon to perform tasks in isolation, far from familiar faces and voices, with the help and guidance of my God. I will keep my mind and body clean, alert and strong, for this is my debt to those who depend upon me. I will not fail those with whom I serve. (from the US Army Special Forces Creed)

Bedside Manners, By Minx (PG-13)

Categories: Janet, Team, Drama
Warnings: none
Author's Webpage/Fic list: Fanfic Archive Post on [livejournal.com profile] _minxy_'s LJ
Link to story: Bedside Manners

Why this should be read: Because it made me remember how much I adore Janet Fraiser.

This fic take place during the early years of the SGC and Janet is busy doing what doctors do - while trying to keep her temper under control. (Thanks to one Colonel O'Neill.)

Minxy writes women who are clearly awesome on a daily basis and I think she gets Janet exactly right. It's also a great view of SG-1 being anxious for a sick teammate from an "outsider" POV.

Written for the Remix/Redux Ficathon, about 1700 words.

SG-3 could probably tell she was angry by the way her heels clicked curtly down the bare concrete floor and reverberated through the halls.

Why this should be read:
Pedagogy is a lovely ficlet wherein Cassie's self-defence teacher is not quite prepared for a (female) student trained by an ex-black ops Colonel. Janet is not impressed. Not much else to say here. An excellent snippet of Cassie's life outside the SGC, which is always nice.

Title: Look to the Heavens and Number the Stars
Author's LJ/DWJ: [personal profile] minervacat
Categories: awesome women, original character, Daniel, Jonas, team, episode related, Janet, character study, angst
Warnings: spoilers through S9, including canon character deaths
Author's Webpage/Fic list: when the floods roll back
Link to story: Look to the Heavens and Number the Stars, parts one and two, and The Silent Language of the Star (a companion fic)

Why This Must Be Read: Minervacat introduces us to a superbly-realized original character, Claire, who is recruited to the SGC by Jack at Daniel’s behest. Claire slowly takes over the staggeringly difficult task of cataloging the artifacts that accumulate over the years. With time, she befriends the characters we know and love - especially Janet, her main source of gossip, and Daniel, who never returns her books. Yet Minervacat cleverly evades the Mary-Sue trap for Claire; this original character remains quietly on the sidelines, interacting only enough to be a part of the story without interfering in the events as we know them, or knowing more than she should.

Covering some seven years of SG-1 history - including a fascinating side-trip into the AU of Moebius - these two fics are elegantly written, with just the right touches of humor and distress to make Claire amazingly real.

A librarian at the SGC, with all that entails. Both these stories are too wonderful to be missed!

Coming Into Being, by Raven (PG)

What happened to all those enthusiastic kidfic reccers?

Title: Coming Into Being

Categories: kidfic, team, humor, Hammond, Janet, Rothman, Nyan, Jacob
Warnings: none
Author's Webpage/Fic list: Sleeping With Ghosts
Link to story: Coming Into Being

Why this should be read: So the members of the team are suddenly downsized. What makes this so much fun, though, is the secondary cast of characters – Hammond, Janet, Jacob, and even Robert Rothman and Nyan (two of my favorites, to be honest!).

While the antics of the children are enjoyable – Jack’s Froot Loops, Daniel’s passive resistance against speaking (or wearing shoes), Sam’s flat refusal to wear anything pink and frilly – it’s really the reactions of the adults around them that make the reader smile. There’s Rothman’s frustration that his boss has turned into what he considers to be a horrible child; there’s Jacob’s secret delight at having some time back with his little girl again. And there’s Teal’c’s bemusement at the personalities of his younger teammates, and Nyan’s drive to help, and Janet’s struggle to communicate with Daniel...

This one is fluffy and fun, with a little character study sneaking around the edges. And it’s definitely a fic that you’re sure to enjoy.

Why this should be read: I read this and loved it and told myself I must rec it immediately. :)

Gorgeous three-way conversation between Cassie, Janet, and Sam, immediately after Singularity when Cassie is trying to figure out the best way to approach her new life, Janet is trying to figure out her new role as guardian, and Sam is trying to figure out the best way to be there for them both. Charming, perfectly in character, and touched with just the right amount of light humor -- this one is definitely a keeper!

Assess This, By BetaCandy (PG)

Why this should be read: In this fic SG-1 goes to the infirmary after "Emancipation", and I have no problem saying that I liked it much better than that episode. It's one of the best Janet fics I've read, in which we get to see Janet's first impressions of SG-1, (almost always fun), and learn a lot about Janet in the process. The stage is set for Janet's relationships with SG-1 and her easy friendship with Sam. And there is plenty of low key humor and funny lines but they don't undermine my belief in the characters or the essential seriousness of the elements that this story explores.

On Janet Fraiser’s third day at the SGC, she meets SG-1 for the first time, as they return from the mission in "Emancipation". Sam gets in trouble, Daniel gets in trouble, Jack gets maternal, and Janet gets to go home and shower.

Why this should be read: This short, sweet piece offers a different perspective on Out of Mind/Into the Fire - what it was like for Janet and George during those wrenching three weeks when SG-1 was MIA and Teal'c was near death. The extra humor of the teamy goodness at the end just makes it that much more fun!

Why this should be read: This fic was written as the second "episode" for Chrysalis, a Stargate virtual mini-season (7.5) which begins with the assumption that Janet Fraiser was badly wounded in Heroes II, but is alive. That's all you need to know to read this story, which worked well for me as a stand alone AU. It's a tense exploration of what SG-1, Jacob, Hammond and Cassie might be willing to do to save Janet's life. And because I knew that this story was an AU, I really couldn't guess how it would be resolved.

Episode 2 for Chrysalis (go to Chrysalis page for Episode 1); To save one life, how much would you sacrifice?
