Why this should be read: I read this and loved it and told myself I must rec it immediately. :)
Gorgeous three-way conversation between Cassie, Janet, and Sam, immediately after Singularity when Cassie is trying to figure out the best way to approach her new life, Janet is trying to figure out her new role as guardian, and Sam is trying to figure out the best way to be there for them both. Charming, perfectly in character, and touched with just the right amount of light humor -- this one is definitely a keeper!
"I let you watch TV, because I'm that kind of ..." Sam could hear Janet hesitate, her voice hanging where she might have been tempted to say mom. They weren't there yet, but Sam was getting the picture for the first time since she'd known Janet that it was something Janet really wanted.
"Because you're cool," Cassie said, and Sam grinned.
"My dad always said that if people knew two words of English, they'd be 'cool' and 'okay.'"
"Also possibly 'Coca-Cola,'" Janet said. "Remind me to tell you about words you shouldn't use in school."
"You mean like 'stargate'?"
"I was actually thinking about swear words, but that's one, too," Janet said. "Nothing about the Goa'uld, or the stargate, or about space travel, unless you're talking about something you saw on TV or a movie."
"You can't put all of space travel off limits," Sam said. "I was totally into astronauts when I was her age."
Janet looked a little frustrated. "I'm trying to keep this simple," she said. "It's going to take a while to sort out the difference between the space shuttle and Goa'uld motherships."
Cassie bit her lip. "I thought only the gods -- the Goa'uld --" She looked exasperated with herself, and tried again. "The Canadians?"
"Not Canadians," Sam said firmly.
