Why this should be read: Serving on a gate team is an awesome job that has its moments of wonder and its moments of pain and its moments of triumph. This 237-word fic adds 'and its moments of wry humor.'

Snippet of fic:
Life in the SGC is a never-ending adventure, Daniel decides. See the universe! Meet new peoples! Save the world!

Why this should be read: This is a fic that could have been an episode of the show, except that it's a story that can be conveyed only in prose -- unless, perhaps, you too have been zapped by the gizmo in the story, which adds a nifty layer of meta to an extraordinarily meta-rich, and extraordinary, fic. Like 'ante meridiem,' this had to be a Carter fic, but this one is a classic science-fictional problem-solution story. It's a vehicle for a beautiful look into Carter's mind, both her regular mind and her mind expanded and illuminated by alien technology (and some key input from Daniel, whose empathetic intuition is as important to his contribution as his linguistics expertise).

Snippet of fic:
A little piece of alienness always followed them home.

Why this should be read: For movie night in the aftermath of 'The Scourge,' the team watches Starship Troopers. Unsurprisingly, and not all on account of the film, the tone of the evening shifts from bantery decompression to serious review of the choices they made on the mission. The cute parts of the fic are very cute, the discussion (and the fic-as-meta) is thought-provoking, and the characterization and Cam point-of-view hit just the right notes.

Why this should be read: A compact, wincingly painful fic that takes the potentially disastrous consequences of gate exploration one vast, harsh step further than 'One False Step.' The characteristic Otterfic twist comes earlier than usual, as the climax of the characterization-rich opening, in stark demonstration of why this had to be a Carter fic. She's efficient, prepared, famously problem-solving -- and this, like the traumatic event in her youth, cannot be fixed.

Why this should be read: This instantly became of my favorite SG-1 fics, and it has stayed one since. It's charming, it makes me smile in pure delight, and it leaves me feeling peaceful and happy. As Jack says at the end of the Aces fic, "Some days are pretty good." This is another one of those.

Why this should be read: A natural event of otherworldly beauty, appreciated by the team with a good plausible dose of 'this is just really pretty, right, not really pretty and also about to kill us?' caution that adds to the enjoyment. I especially like the meta-ey sidebars: Carter noting the difference between a scientific description and aesthetic appreciation, and Daniel choosing not to videotape, because recording a thing can detract from the actual experience of it, and this is an experience worth savoring directly, fully in the moment.

Why this should be read: A beautiful study of Daniel as the team goes through the gate to explore a planet they haven't been to before. This fic is a sense-of-wonder refresher: a celebration of how fundamentally marvelous gate travel is. It's also a gift to Daniel, who is musing, as the story opens in the embarkation room, that it's been a long time since they met a truly alien race. The fertile Daniel headspace, rich with associations, is portrayed in loving detail. Through Daniel's perceptions and deductions, so is what they find in the new ancient world they step into.

Reccer's Weeks: Calling Paian!

  • Apr. 15th, 2012 at 7:07 PM
We are now in the third of our Reccer's Weeks! After four fantastic recs from [personal profile] pipisafoat, we're ready for our new reccer of the week: Paian, who has often recced here in the past and will treating us to at least two new gen recs.

[personal profile] paian will be tagging all recs as reccer: paian, as she has in the past. (So if you want to check out her previous recs, here's a golden opportunity!)

If you are interested in doing a reccer's week for the comm, there is still one week available. Comment at this link to claim a week of your own. If no one claims that final week, I'll take it over myself, but I'm selfish always eager to see new recs for stories that I haven't read yet! :)

Why this should be read: At the end of 'Chimera,' canon gave Sarah Gardner a hug and abandoned her forever. This fic checks in to see how she's doing -- she's changed, and she's haunted, but she's OK, and she calls Daniel and tells him so -- and presents an affecting study of the quiet triumph of the good days over the bad.

Why this should be read: Sara fic is a rare find. Even rarer is good Sara fic that really is Sara fic, not Jack fic in disguise. This is a spare and unsentimental 500-word portrait of Sara becoming about herself.

Why this should be read: Set about ten years in the future, when Sam is the general in command of the SGC and the Stargate Program has just gone public, this lovely, pensive fic is a combination of turning-outward (Sam wrestling with the demands of presenting the Program to the world accurately and sympathetically via the unruly media) and turning-inward (the team, coming back together to mourn the passing of a longtime comrade, closing in tight on itself). Outstanding Sam characterization, plausible and poignant extrapolation, 2431 words.
