In her dream—the same dream, the only dream she has these days—she steps through the Gate and arrives on the other side. When she turns around to greet the rest of the expedition, they're gone, and the Gate is gone, and it's raining. She wakes up with her own voice in her head, reading from the tattered notebook, a droning record of solitary years. She paces through the final days of preparation with the image floating behind her eyes, the notebook resting on a stone, the rain soaking its inscribed pages. The horizon is a perfect circle.
