Under Fire

Why This Must Be Read: Under Fire opens with a bang right in the middle of the story, as a dazed Sam recovers consciousness to confront an angry, harsh commanding officer who seems to keep demanding a lot more than she's capable of delivering. As the backstory is slowly filled in, together with the gaps in Sam's memory, the reader is left just as puzzled as Sam at Colonel O'Neill's hostile behavior. It seems very out-of-character for him... or is it? By the time SG-1 reaches the safety of the Stargate, Sam's self-doubts have multiplied exponentially, and she has stretched herself to the limits – and beyond.

It's got great characterization, teamy goodness, stubborn Sam and breathless drama. What more could you possibly need?

Categories: Samantha Carter, team, drama, hurt/comfort, Sam and Jack friendship, Sam and Daniel friendship
Warnings: none
Author's Webpage/Fic list: My little bits of fiction
Link to story: With Great Power

Why this should be read: Amilyn gives us an excellent Sam story, as the team finds themselves trapped by Jaffa and are desperate to find any way of escape. The key turns out to be a part of Sam that she dreads using... and that just might take her somewhere, or to become someone, that she doesn't want to be.

Great Sam POV, impeccable teamwork, wonderful Sam and Daniel bonding, and a thoughtful look at Jolinar's legacy. You'll love the breathless scene in the Gateroom, and the final conversation between Jack and Sam, when he proves himself both a marvelous CO and a compassionate human being. With Great Power is a great Sam story and a fantastic team fic, so go read it right now!

The Blue Jell-O Metaphor, by Surreallis

Categories: Sam, character study, theme: Super Sam, angst, humor, team, Sam and Teal'c friendship, Sam and Daniel friendship
Warnings: some language
Author's Webpage/Fic list: [livejournal.com profile] surreallis_fic
Link to story: The Blue Jell-O Metaphor

Why this should be read: This is my definitive Sam Carter fic. It showcases her brilliant contrasts and why I love her so much.

Surrealis does an amazing job of presenting us with the many aspects of Samantha Carter: her struggle as the only woman on the team, her frustration that her brilliance scares off men before a relationship can even begin, her isolation from the women who are supposed to be her peers. Ridiculous expectations from one side are paired with contemptuous dismissal from another, and Sam sees herself as the single glass of blue Jell-O in a sea of red.

But then she's reminded of what she does have: an equally brilliant teammate who appreciates her mind and personality; a different teammate who knows, all too well, what it means to be an outsider and offers solidarity; and a CO who exasperates and inspires and encourages her in turn, to become ever greater than she already is.

"Super Sam" meets Major Sam meets Sam the woman meets Sam of SG-1, and they all decide, together, that things are pretty much okay the way they are... But she still isn’t wearing the tights!

Calling all reccers: Super Sam!

  • Oct. 12th, 2009 at 10:11 PM
Our latest theme is Super Sam! Stories that feature Sam in charge, Sam saving the day, Sam struggling - and succeeding! - at solving a knotty problem. Let's pay tribute to the woman who could both geek out with Daniel, shoot a P90 at Jack's behest with enough accuracy to awe a Goa'uld, and share a close friendship as fellow warriors with Teal'c.

Other recs that do not fit the theme may still be posted, of course, but these next few weeks should put the spotlight on Samantha Carter. If you post a rec that fits this theme, please use the theme: super sam tag (either by tagging the rec yourself or including it in the categories, so the admin can tag it for you.)

Feel free to read the FAQ before posting. Official format is included in the FAQ entry and on the comm's profile page. And, as always, I will happily answer any questions you might have, and welcome any suggestions for future themes.

For the time being, I am leaving the comm with unmoderated status. It seems to be working out well! And I will restrain myself from posting a rec for my favorite Sam character study fic for a day or two, in case someone else wants to beat me to reccing it. :)

And if you haven't actually visited the comm for a while, take a quick moment to view it and admire the beautiful banner, created by [personal profile] sg_betty. Thanks so much, Betty!
