Why this should be read: Two compact and sparkling gems of characterization through reading material. Teal'c's choices (official and unofficial) are full of snark and satire and social commentary, conveyed in a style that perfectly emulates Teal'c's brand of deadpan humor. Daniel's choice is vividly evocative of his family history as he conceives it; his section is beautifully written, insightful and moving and uplifting. And both pieces have killer last lines.

Teal'c gets a paper cut for the first time, and we get character study and cultural study and early-seasons team bonding all wrapped up in one delightful 950-word package.

What would very-early-seasons Teal'c make of a North American convenience store? Daniel takes Teal'c with him on a coffee run topside, and finds out.
This was the author's first Stargate fic, and it's a cute and pointed one, and I wish she'd written more in the fandom.

Why this should be read:
Because it's another road-trip fic by Aces, because this fic and that one make a beautiful pair, and because the first fic I recced this week had Cam cooped up inside. This one has Cam cooped up in another timeline, the road trip he never took with Teal'c playing out (in skillfully rendered conditional tense) in his head as he makes a solitary drive of his own, and it's achey and haunting and gorgeously written ... and, ultimately, both moving and hopeful. About 2300 words.

Why this should be read:
It's summer in the hemisphere where I am, and that's a good time for road trips and road-trip fic, which Aces writes with her customary warmth, gentle humor, and insightful characterization. This one is Sam and Vala -- as Cam says in the opening, "You're going to Thelma and Louise it with an alien chick across the American Southwest for a weekend?" -- and it's as amusing as you'd expect with Vala involved, but it's also a beautiful vehicle (pun not entirely unintended) for the kind of interaction between them that I was dying to see on the show, and the concluding scene is wonderfully teamy. About 5500 words.

Why this should be read:
After being hit with a staff blast and healed by Vala with a purloined hand device, Cam is held for observation and tests in the same room of the same hospital where he recuperated after Antarctica, and the rest of the team pitches in -- each in her or his own delightfully in-character way -- to make his stay bearable. Fabulous Cam point of view, smart and entertaining dialogue, and outstanding, 100% sap-free team friendship. About 4600 words.

time travel rec theme. We'll be leaving that open until the end of this week, so you still have a chance to rec your favorite gen time travel fic before we, er, run out of time. :)
Back when we polled for preferences, many people expressed an interest in the possibility of specific reccers volunteering for one week, with any kind of gen story eligible for reccing. We're going to try that during July and see how it works out.
By signing up, you are committing yourself to reccing a minimum of two stories during that week, although more recs would certainly be welcome! Please do not volunteer if you don't think you will be able to rec two fics.
There are four week-long reccing periods available:
July 4-10 claimed by
sam_gardener
July 11-17 claimed by
samantilles
July 18-24
July 25-31
I will be absolutely delighted if all four weeks are claimed! But even if they're not, it will be interesting to see if this experiment succeeds.
Comment below to claim a specific week or to ask any questions you might have.

Author's Webpage/Fic list: Tallulah Abridged
Link to story: Half-life
Why this should be read: In this peaceful, gently bantery post-series piece from Jack's point of view, Jack and Daniel are hanging out after a barbecue, Daniel translating the insults hurled by the kids tearing around the yard, Jack translating Daniel. (We don't know whose kids they are, just that they're there, the next generation, still full of energy as evening comes on, literally and, maybe, metaphorically.) A smile-inducing 1320-word meditation, rich with keen observations and character insights in a beautifully portrayed Jack headspace.

Why this should be read:
This is a painful but wonderfully gratifying missing scene for 'Secrets.' It explains quite a bit and expands on even more in the space of its 1500 words -- a great example of fic filling in the gaps left onscreen, both logistical and emotional.
Aurora's portrayal of the characters is always spot-on. Reading this is like watching a scene that was shot for the episode but cut for time, with the entree into Teal'c's mind and heart that prose permits, and with Aurora's eye for continuity and plot.
