Calling all reccers: lost episode recs!

  • Jun. 23rd, 2011 at 6:50 PM
It's time for a new theme! We're looking for lost episode fics -- original, well-plotted stories that the reader can imagine as a lost episode that never aired. (Perhaps it did in an alternate reality...) Whether it's set in early seasons or later seasons or even between seasons, we want to see those "lost episodes" recced here!

Feel free to refresh your memory of the comm rules at the FAQ before posting. Official format is included in the FAQ entry and on the comm's profile page. If you choose to tag your own entry (you don't have to do so), please include the theme: lost episode tag as well as any others that you find appropriate. And if you need a tag that isn't yet available, please comment and let me know.

Round-up of awesome women recs

  • Jun. 19th, 2011 at 2:56 PM
I'm reluctant to end the awesome women theme, as we've had such a wonderful and enthusiastic response. But there have been no new recs for a week now, and while all older themes remain permanently open for new recs, it's time for something new.

In the meantime, I hope you've all enjoyed the many awesome women recs we've had in these past six weeks! I've included links to them all below the cut. Many thanks to [personal profile] rbmifan, [personal profile] sam_gardener, and [personal profile] beatrice_otter for their contributions. :)

We'll have a new theme announced in the next day or so. In the meantime, don't forget that all gen recs are welcome here, whether or not they fit one of our older themes.

We had some very nice recs in the last few weeks of open themes:

four recs under the cut )

Thanks, Paian and Rmbifan!

Time for a new theme, and here's one that Stargate fandom does very well despite the Boys at Bridge: awesome women recs!

Whether the woman in question is Sam, Janet, Vala, Sha're, Cassie, Catherine, Drey'auc, Gairwyn, Merrin, Reese, Kal'el (the Jaffa, not the Kryptonian), original or otherwise, if a gen fic features a woman being awesome, we want to see it recced here!

Feel free to refresh your memory of the comm rules at the FAQ before posting. Official format is included in the FAQ entry and on the comm's profile page. If you choose to tag your own entry (you don't have to do so), please include the theme: awesome women tag as well as any others that you find appropriate. And if you need a tag that isn't yet available, please comment and let me know.

As an added note, Dreamwidth is currently in the middle of the three weeks for Dreamwidth meme. [community profile] sg1genrecs has a three weeks tag, so don't hesitate to use it. :)

Round-up of kidfic recs

  • Apr. 17th, 2011 at 11:21 PM
The kidfic theme ran for longer than scheduled because you kept adding more recs! :) Thanks to [personal profile] sam_gardener for her usual enthusiasm, as well as [personal profile] green_grrl and [personal profile] rbmifan, who joins the reccer ranks for the first time. ::cheers::

links to kidfic recs under the cut )

As I'm going to be mostly off-line for the next week or so, I am now declaring official open-house on themes. Choose a favorite story to fit any of the 23 themes we've celebrated so far here at [community profile] sg1genrecs, or rec a favorite fic that doesn't fit any theme at all. And I'll be back after Pesach. Enjoy. :)

Calling all reccers: kidfic recs!

  • Mar. 1st, 2011 at 6:41 PM
Time for a new theme, and here's one that is very popular among many parts of the fandom, even though it's not a real favorite of mine: kidfics!

(Mind you, I've read some excellent ones that I've enjoyed tremendously. So you'll all just have to rec your favorites to encourage me to read some more, right?)

For the purpose of our theme, kidfic is identified as any of the following: stories set pre-series, about any member of the team (or someone else from the show) as children; fic about canon children on the show (Reetou!Charlie, Merrim, Cassie, Shifu, etc.); fic in which someone's interaction with children plays a major role; and stories in which someone is turned into a child (or is an AU in which the character is a child to begin with). If there's another kidfic definition that I'm missing, please comment and let me know!

Remember that this is a GEN rec community, so stories about the team's biological children (excluding Ry'ac, of course) invariably would include ship and would not be permitted. If you're not sure if a story qualifies, don't hesitate to ask for clarification.

Feel free to refresh your memory of the comm rules at the FAQ before posting. Official format is included in the FAQ entry and on the comm's profile page. If you choose to tag your own entry (you don't have to do so), please include the theme: kidfic tag as well as any others that you find appropriate. And if you need a tag that isn't yet available, please comment and let me know.

Calling all reccers: stranded recs!

  • Jan. 19th, 2011 at 8:03 PM
Time for a new theme! [personal profile] green_grrl suggested some excellent new ones, and we're going with getting stranded off-world. Admittedly, these kind of fics are often associated with ship. :) But if you know of a gen story that involves one or more people being stranded off-world for any length of time, we want to see it recced here!

Stories that deal with Daniel on Abydos in the year between the movie and the show that include an element of being stranded -- that is, Daniel strongly feeling that he's cut off from Earth -- are definitely included in this theme. In fact, if you know of any such story, I would really want to read it.

Feel free to refresh your memory of the comm rules at the FAQ before posting. Official format is included in the FAQ entry and on the comm's profile page. If you choose to tag your own entry (you don't have to do so), please include the theme: stranded off-world tag as well as any others that you find appropriate. And if you need a tag that isn't yet available, please comment and let me know.

Calling all comm subscribers: taking stock

  • Jan. 4th, 2011 at 6:38 PM
A new calendar year is a good time to look back at where [community profile] sg1genrecs has been and where we hope to see it go. :)

Since January 2010, we've had ten different themes for our recs:

2010 comm themes )

In addition, we had three weeks in which a specific reccer committed herself to at least two recs:

sam gardener

paian

samantilles

Since this time last year, over 50 new people have subscribed to this comm. That makes me very happy. :) Many (or most) of you are here to be directed to stories, not to rec, and that's fine! But I would like to remind you all that anyone is welcome to post here at [community profile] sg1genrecs, whether you're a member or not, and that the comm won't work without participation.

(On that note, I'd like to add an extra word of thanks to [personal profile] sam_gardener, who has been our most consistent reccer to date. Your recs are always appreciated!)

For the next week or so, the comm is open to any and all types of SG-1 gen recs. That's true in all circumstances, actually, but before announcing an official new theme, I'd like to get some feedback from you. Is there a new theme you'd like to see featured here? Would you enjoy another month of specific reccers? Any ideas how to promote more activity?

If you'd rather offer anonymous feedback, I've disabled IP tracking (I think). I await your comments with interest. :)

Calling all reccers: SG-1/SGA fics!

  • Nov. 14th, 2010 at 12:23 PM
Last month, our theme was Janet friendship. I'm still not very good at gauging interest, because I was hoping for lots and lots of recs. Instead, we had a very scanty month. Here's the rec list:

Janet friendship recs )

In the non-themed category, there was one rec: When Narnia and SG-1 Collide, by Cofax (G)

So onto a new theme, and let's hope this one garners more enthusiasm: SG-1/SGA crossovers. This includes SGA characters in the SGC and SG-1 characters on Atlantis. For the purposes of this comm, Sam fics set in SGA S4 are only eligible if they involve her connection with SG-1 and/or characters from the SGC. If you know of a gen fic that involves both SG-1 and SGA, we want to see it recced here!

Feel free to refresh your memory of the comm rules at the FAQ before posting. Official format is included in the FAQ entry and on the comm's profile page. If you choose to tag your own entry (you don't have to do so), please include the theme: SGA crossover tag as well as any others that you find appropriate. And if you need a tag that isn't yet available, please comment and let me know.

Last month, the theme was getting snaked.

round-up of last month's recs )

Our new theme is Janet friendship. It doesn't matter if the story deals with Janet's friendship with Sam, Daniel, Jack, Teal'c, George, or even original characters - if it's about Janet and her friendships with others, we want to see it recced here!

Feel free to refresh your memory of the comm rules at the FAQ before posting. Official format is included in the FAQ entry and on the comm's profile page. If you choose to tag your own entry (you don't have to do so), please include the theme: janet friendship tag as well as any others that you find appropriate. And if you need a tag that isn't yet available, please comment and let me know.

Calling all reccers: getting snaked recs!

  • Sep. 2nd, 2010 at 11:19 PM
August's under the influence theme gave us a nice crop of recs:

Creak, by Nanda (PG)

Daniel Jackson and the Flagon with the Dragon by Winterstar

Control by Yum@

Battlefields by Ellen Caldera

Undertow, by Abyssis (PG-13)

Lost in Translation, by Vathara (PG)

In the non-themed department, we also had this:

Four Teal'c & Sam Moments We Never Got to See, by Spark Force (PG)

Thanks to [personal profile] paian and [personal profile] babs_bee for their contributions!

Our new theme is Getting Snaked. Stories in which a member of the team, a minor character, or an OC is Goa'ulded or even Tokra'ed, whether permanently or temporarily, all fit the bill. If you've read a good gen fic that fits this theme, we want to see it recced here!

If you recced a story back in July 2009 when we did the Tok'ra theme that fits this theme as well, you may edit your entry to include the getting snaked tag.

Feel free to read the FAQ before posting. Official format is included in the FAQ entry and on the comm's profile page. If you choose to tag your own entry (you don't have to do so), please include the theme: getting snaked tag as well as any others that you find appropriate. And if you need a tag that isn't yet available, please comment and let me know.
Over the course of our reccers' month, we had three reccers sign up: [personal profile] sam_gardener, [personal profile] samantilles, and [personal profile] paian. Due to the timing, Paian did not have an official announcement to kick off her week, but she treated us to four recs anyway:

Visiting Hours, by Teand (G)

To Travel Hopefully, by Aces (G)

A Pleasant Road, by Aces (G)

Alien in the 7-Eleven at 3am: A Study, by Eleanor K. (G)

And a few more last-minute contributions from [personal profile] sam_gardener and [personal profile] samantilles:

Archaeology, By Penknife (PG)

Sticky Situation, by Phoenix-Cry (G)

Thanks, you three! :)

And now it's time for a new theme: under the influence. It might be a telepathic mind whammy, off-world herbs or drinks, copious amounts of alcohol, a plot-hole-shaped mysterious Ancient artifact, or accidental inhalation of alien pollen. It doesn't matter if the influence is deliberate or innocent, angsty or cracky - if it's gen and SG-1 and involves some kind of altered state of mind, we want to see it recced here!

Feel free to refresh your memory of the comm rules at the FAQ before posting. Official format is included in the FAQ entry and on the comm's profile page. If you choose to tag your own entry (you don't have to do so), please include the theme: under the influence tag as well as any others that you find appropriate. And if you need a tag that isn't yet available, please comment and let me know.

Calling all reccers: open comm!

  • Jul. 18th, 2010 at 5:23 PM
[personal profile] samantilles made two recs for us during her reccer's week:

A Lot in Common by Maggie C (G)

Infirmary Notes, by Aurora Novarum (PG)

Thanks, Samantilles!

We do not have any claimants yet for the last two weeks of July (if you're interested, please comment at this post, and a reccer for this week can start immediately). Therefore, I am officially opening the comm to any and all gen recs. It can relate to one of our seventeen themes or simply be a favorite fic - we'll happily take them all.

If you've never recced here before, now's a great time to start! Take a quick look at the FAQ and you'll be ready to go. :)

Calling Sam Gardener!

  • Jul. 4th, 2010 at 10:22 AM
So our time travel theme inspired three recs:

The Other Side of the Time Loop, by Yvi (PG-13)

1969 Prime and Prime-Minus-One, by Redbyrd (PG-13)

Time Was, by Fabrisse (PG-13)

We are now starting Reccer's Weeks, in which a specific person volunteers to rec a mimimum of two fics during the course of a chosen week. First up is [personal profile] sam_gardener, who has often recced here in the past. These recs can be any genre (as long as it's gen, heh) so it'll be fun to see what we get!

[personal profile] sam_gardener will be tagging all recs with the reccer: sam gardener. Sam (may I call you Sam? ::grins::) can continue to use this tag even after the week has ended, and is welcome to retroactively tag any previous recs as well.

If you are interested in doing a reccer's week for the comm, the last two weeks of July are still available. You can comment at this entry to claim a week of your own.

Sign-ups for July: reccer's weeks

  • Jun. 28th, 2010 at 9:44 PM
We've had a relatively poor response to the time travel rec theme. We'll be leaving that open until the end of this week, so you still have a chance to rec your favorite gen time travel fic before we, er, run out of time. :)

Back when we polled for preferences, many people expressed an interest in the possibility of specific reccers volunteering for one week, with any kind of gen story eligible for reccing. We're going to try that during July and see how it works out.

By signing up, you are committing yourself to reccing a minimum of two stories during that week, although more recs would certainly be welcome! Please do not volunteer if you don't think you will be able to rec two fics.

There are four week-long reccing periods available:

July 4-10 claimed by [personal profile] sam_gardener

July 11-17 claimed by [personal profile] samantilles

July 18-24

July 25-31

I will be absolutely delighted if all four weeks are claimed! But even if they're not, it will be interesting to see if this experiment succeeds.

Comment below to claim a specific week or to ask any questions you might have.

Call all reccers: time travel fics!

  • Jun. 3rd, 2010 at 8:10 PM
We had seven recs for our crackfic theme! I've linked the recs here for your convenience:

Ketchup, by Jaed (PG)

The Art of the Deal, by Littera Abactor (PG)

To Travel The Galaxy* (*and eat pie), by Cowardly Lion

Is That A Scroll in Your Toga, or Are You Just Happy to See Me?, by Redbyrd (PG)

Investigation, by Penknife (G)

The Metamorphosis, by Fyere (G)

Yet Another SG-1 Adventure, by Minnow (PG)

And now it's time for a new theme: time travel. Sam and Teal'c meeting four-year-old Daniel in 1969? Something set within the alt-timeline of Continuum? Mini!Jack sneaking the timeship out for a joyride? If it's gen and SG-1 and involves time travel, whether it's accidental, intentional, or via outside influence, we want to see it recced here!

Please bear in mind that we prefer to have new recs rather than repeating those we've already had. Since the two themes are similar, take a quick look at the theme: moebius tag if you have a Moebius-related story to check if the fic has has already been recced. If you somehow miss a rec and repost one, though, we won't send Teal'c after you! :)

Feel free to refresh your memory of the comm rules at the FAQ before posting. Official format is included in the FAQ entry and on the comm's profile page. If you choose to tag your own entry (you don't have to do so), please include the tag as well as any others that you find appropriate. And if you need a tag that isn't yet available, please comment and let me know.
