Why this should be read:

This is a great little piece about Cassie's struggle to remain Hankan while assimilating into being on Earth. She's a little snippity and angry, and perfectly written as a young teenage girl. When confronted with the angry teenager, the team each acts in their own style, and its not really surprising when Daniel is the only one who handles it right. This is also an adorable Cassie and Daniel bonding moment.

Damage Control, By Redbyrd (PG-13)

Warnings: some bad language

Why this should be read: One of my favorites, I have reread this story so many times that it's characterization of Steven Raynor has become cannon for me. Part of the fun of this fic is the view of Daniel through Steven's eyes and his comparison of pre-Stargate Daniel to the changed person he meets during "The Curse". But I also became very fond of Steven and really felt for him by the end.

Redbyrd brings some sanity to the Stargate world and the stakes in war against the goa'uld, the loss of Sarah and Dr. Jordan feel more real because of it. She writes "I wanted to tie up some of the loose ends in this episode and to try developing Steven's character into something a bit more complex than the very limited view we got from the show. I felt he couldn't be all bad if his first thought when they find him injured at the end of the episode was to apologize to Daniel."

Hilarious aliens, fabulous Jack voice, clueless Daniel, incredulous Sam, unflappable Teal'c. So much fun!

The Wrong Button, by Knightshade (PG)

Categories: Daniel Jackson, Jack O’Neill, Samantha Carter, apocafic, humor, angst, Jack and Daniel friendship
Warnings: none
Author's Website: Knightshade's Garden
Link to story: The Wrong Button

Why This Must Be Read: “Jack always suspected that one day Daniel would push the wrong button and the world would end.”

Of course, it’s which world that makes this story so fascinating…

What begins as fun and fluffy, with entertaining Wonder Twins geekery and fantastic Jack-and-Daniel banter, suddenly takes a ninety degree turn into horror when the wrong button gets pushed and Sam, Jack, and Daniel get to literally watch as a world is completely destroyed. There’s great characterization and wonderful dialogue, as Jack helps Daniel come to some kind of acceptance -- by reminding him of their shared history, and the triumphs and tragedies that inevitably result just from living.

Call this a sort of light apocafic, perhaps. But read it, and enjoy!

Why this should be read: To quote the summary for this thoughtful fic: angst, apocafic, hope, zombies, donuts.

Teal'c, lone survivor on Earth, slowly, contemplatively makes his way to Area 51 for what he prays will be his ticket off-planet. You will be moved by his thoughts on the Tau'ri, the little metal box of keepsakes he carries, and the final memento he takes from Earth, to serve as its legacy in the stars.

Despite being apocafic, this is almost gentle, and perfectly Teal'c... and you'll finish reading it with a smile.

Why this should be read:
Whatever it is, I don’t care. I think sometimes it hurts us that we’re friends.”

This episode tag to Proving Ground explores Daniel's military competence through a conversation with Jack, opening up a window on Daniel's underlying conflicts throughout season five and preparing the way for Kelowna.  It is short but powerful, and I can't recommend it highly enough.

Why this should be read: This was one of the very first Stargate fics I ever read and it remains a personal favorite. Well-written, spot-on Jack and Daniel with Sam, Teal'c, Janet and even a bit of Ferretti thrown in

Why this should be read: I've always loved the idea of a SG-1/Discworld crossover, if it's played for humor instead of crack.

This fic? Made. Of. Win.

The Luggage at its most recalcitrant cowed by Jack, Death and cats and his acquaintance with Daniel, Teal'c and the Eyebrow of Irony, Sam trying to explain quantum, of all things, to Death...

I repeat: made of win, and funny enough for even non-Discworld fans to enjoy. If you love pTerry? Go read this right now.

Author's Webpage/Fic list: God, I wish she had a complete list with everything somewhere. I'd settle for just using the same name everywhere. Main places I've found are: FF.net (where she is Christina K), Stargatefan (where she is C.L. Kamnikar), her LJ (she has tags for fanfic and fic, not sure what the difference is), her defunct website can be found on the internet archive, and she seems to have a current website that requires a username and password to logon (chaos.horsechicks.com). She also has a Roswell fic and some Buffy fics which you have to scroll through other authors to find (and OMG the popups on that site). Or you can google her yourself; known names include Christina Kamnikar, Christina K, Chaos, the butterfly, Kiki, and Chris.

Why this should be read:

There are not words to describe how hysterically funny this fic is. Jack and Teal'c go golfing through the Stargate to let off steam during Window of Opportunity. This fic is funny and totally in character, and fits perfectly within that episode. You must read this, there are not words for how perfect it is.

Harsh Reality, by Raven (G)

Title: Harsh Reality
Author's LJ/DWJ: [personal profile] loneraven
Categories: theme: quantum mirror, episode related, daniel, team, humor, angst
Warnings: none
Author's Webpage/Fic list: Sleeping With Ghosts
Link to story: Harsh Reality

Why this should be read: This short, sharp fic seems, at first, to be an earnest discussion about alternate realities, taking place between the members of SG-1 as they sit together in the commissary. Despite the big, honkin' clue, that's all I thought it was at first, myself.

It's fun to watch Daniel insist on a conversation that Jack would be quite happy to avoid, as he muses on the possibilities of alternate universes through the quantum mirror and the onus put upon them by their good fate. The conversation unravels into snark and good humor, and we think that the whole story is just a snapshot of SG-1 in the commissary...

Until. Until you read the final part of the fic, and you realize the timeframe of that conversation, and in just which reality it didn't take place.

And then you wince.

And then, if you're like me, you'll go back and read this powerful little story all over again.

Rearranging Fate, by Redbyrd (PG-13)

Title: Rearranging Fate
Author's LJ/DWJ: [personal profile] redbyrd
Categories: theme: quantum mirror, drama, AU, Daniel, Jack, Sam, Kawalsky, episode related, team
Warnings: some language
Author's Webpage/Fic list: Redbyrd's Stargate Fanfiction
Link to story: Rearranging Fate

Why this should be read: Rearranging Fate begins with AU Charlie Kawalsky's POV in, well, POV, as he discovers exactly how essential Daniel Jackson has been to the success of "our" universe. The story follows Kawalsky through his parts of the episode, then turns its back on the quantum mirror to focus on what happens next, as Kawalsky lobbies to find "their" Daniel Jackson and make him a part of the SGA.

Redbyrd does a really wonderful job of extrapolating the differences between the mirror-POV universe and our own. From the moment we meet Daniel in Cairo to his unceremonious arrival at the SGA in handcuffs to the slow creation of this universe's version of a new SG-1, we're met with different choices and different paths that all seem eminently reasonable. Dr. Carter the civilian would hardly join her husband on SG-1, so Redbyrd gives us the canonical also-ran. The SGC would surely have given the SGA some essential mission reports, so we get to see Tonane's people and their "spirits" approached in the right way - although apparently, nothing can ever go right on Shyla's planet, even if you're forewarned against sarcophagi. In a really fascinating twist, the events of one particular late season 3 episode are paralleled at more or less the same timeframe... but with enough differences to leave the reader not quite sure of what's really happening!

This quantum mirror fic is one of my favorite Redbyrd stories, and I know you'll find it a long, satisfying read.

Why this should be read: I'm so excited to be able to rec my favorite quantum mirror story. Part team action story, part Sam/Daniel friendship story, part character study, all wonderful. Daniel and Sam struggle with a Goa'uld mystery, a near death experience, and a close encounter with AU doubles of themselves.
